Yuletide Sparks on a Cold Night
The warmth of the hearth fire brings joy on a frigid night in winter. In the same way, the joyous ringing out of the symphony ochestra warms the heart. As symphony orchestras play their christmas music for orchestra, audiences feel the romance of the season once again, for childhood memories flow freely in the yuletide season. Holiday music includes traditional favorites, as well as new music that composers hope will become part of the Christmas season. Quite few new carols within the past half century have become part of the yule season. Most of the carols known to Americans today were composed in the latter part of the eighteenth century and more are from the nineteenth century. During the Victorian Age, the became institutionalized in our culture. Today, fewer and fewer new carols are added. This is most likely true because the age has become more secular. With television and theater so available, Americans are less likely to visit churches as in the past.
